These are recent water colours by Afzal Shaafiu Hassan (Afu). Trained as an illustrator/designer Afu has been working on a series of water colours depicting life in the atolls. He works on several series at the same time; on different themes and in different media (MW, 2006).

These are images of Hassan Ziyad’s recent works (at various stages of completion). Ziyad is a self-taught artist working primarily with acrylic (poster and fabric colours) on canvas. He has also worked for a number of years producing souvenir t-shirts and still makes a lot of ’souvenir’ painitngs as a commercial activity. He is a very accomplished draftsman as can be seen from these paintings, some of which he makes in a few days. Some of them are highly realistic and yet contain a ’synthetic’ quality that is hard to pin-point; perhaps its the way he handles light. It could also be a quality of the paint he uses. But there is a pronounced serene element to all of them be it a landscape or a still life.
